Annie is a young woman who returns to her childhood home after the death of her mother, and along the way, a bunch of paranormal occurrences begin to happen in the home, leading Annie to try and solve a mystery regarding her family’s past.

At first it seemed that although the first couple of scenes containing supernatural elements were tension-filled and well executed – one might begin to suspect that this could turn out to be yet another in a long line of cliched haunted house flicks. But The Pact turned out to be much more than that – somewhat surprisingly considering some of the lackluster reviews it’s gotten.

Caity Lotz stars as Annie and was extremely believable in her role. Her character demonstrated a lot of realistic reactions for what any regular person would do if they encountered or became entangled in the sort of situation Annie found herself in. Her performance is truly enjoyable to watch and she is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Annie’s acquaintance Stevie, played by, Haley Hudson, does a terrific job in her role as a blind woman who can communicate with the dead. She stole the screen in her scenes, and added a lot to the creepy proceedings.

The Pact turned out to have some very intense scenes — perhaps frightening even. There are some real moments of nerve-wracking tension. One of my favorite scenes involved an impromptu DIY Ouija board created on the floor with a crucifix used as the pointer/planchete.

The final scene is scary as shit, if not totally believable. But effective and memorable it is.

I do recommend The Pact to my readers. It is one of the best and most well made horror films of the year. Not quite in my Top 5, but excellently worthy nonetheless.
